We need to build confidence in the Justice system – DPP

Director of Public Prosecutions of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Sejilla Mc Dowall has spoken of the need to build public confidence in the Justice system of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).

Mc Dowall made the observation on Friday, January 12, as she addressed the opening ceremony of the ECSC which was live-streamed from Grenada.

“As a people…we must consider whether we will continue to diminish and rubbish the work and the worth of our key national and regional institutions such as the court, the DPP’s offices and the Attorney’s General chambers and the like.”

Mc Dowall who was confirmed as DPP here in 2020, said that as a people, we can also choose to be part “of the rebuilding efforts, in difficult but exciting times.”

Friday marked the court’s first physical opening since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

It was also the last such sitting which will be presided over by Chief Justice Janice M.Pereira.

In honouring the retiring Chief Justice, Mc Dowall thanked her for her wisdom, grace, voice and passion in her service to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
