Teenage sailor to make solo fundraising crossing to Bequia in his Laser craft

Fresh from his placement in the top three of the Optimist Class in the December 17, 2023 Sailing Competition at Calliaqua Bay, young Kai Marks – Dasent is taking on a much bigger challenge this weekend.

On Sunday morning, January 14, the 13 year old will set sail from the Blue Lagoon Marina, docking in at the Bar One in Bequia.

The 10- mile journey across the Bequia channel is primarily to raise funds to support sailors who will be participating in international events.

On his journey, young Kai will be manning solo, the ILCA4 Laser boat.

In close proximity to Kai will be a support team inclusive of safety officers and coaches, aboard the speed boat Tic Tac.

The young sailor said that he has been inspired by the exploits of 16 year old Scarlett Hadley, who last October/ November, became the first to represent St Vincent and the Grenadines in Sailing at the Pan American Games held in Chile.

“I’ve been sailing for six years, it’s my passion. I’m inspired by Scarlett Hadley’s achievements last year, I want to compete on the international stage, and I want to help the other sailors too, (but) I know funding is critical”, Kai told SEARCHLIGHT.

In preparation for this maritime challenge, the youngster has been collaborating with local charter company skipper, Bry Mascoll from Horizon Yachts, to ensure the safety and success of his endeavour.

Kai is urging well wishers to contribute to this cause and support his lofty ambitions. Persons wishing to contribute can make contact with Sabrina at 1-784 532 9746 or email vincysailingsvg@gmail.com for donation details.
