SVG Embassy in Taiwan hands over sports equipment

Sports equipment and other related paraphernalia valued at US$62,000 were donated to various organizations during a ceremony held at the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Thursday December 21.

The sports equipment was sourced in Taiwan by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Embassy in Taiwan through their ‘Community Revitalization through Sport and Culture Project’.

The event, which took place during the height of the Christmas Season, was in the making months prior as Ambassador of SVG to Taiwan Andrea Bowman alluded to in her remarks. Ambassador Bowman said “the strength and coherence of our communities, our communities’ ability to recognize the trust that is necessary within a community to make it strong, that is vital to the rebuilding of St Vincent and the Grenadines following the poly-crises which we have experienced.”

The items were sourced from Taiwanese patrons as well as from Vincentians residing in Taiwan.

The distribution of the sports equipment here in St Vincent and the Grenadines was facilitated by the Embassy of Taiwan in SVG. Ambassador Bowman said this is the third time the local Taiwanese Embassy is facilitating a donation on behalf of the SVG Embassy in Taiwan.

Beneficiary organizations included the Playaz Youth Academy, Greiggs Football Club, North Leeward Predators and Diamond Spartans. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment also received a large cache of sporting equipment, including footballs, basketballs, ball pumps and shin guards.

Ambassador of Taiwan to SVG Fiona Fan expressed her delight at the continued endearing friendship between Taiwan and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Ambassador Fan said this country continues to pledge its unwavering support for Taiwan in the international arena.

The equipment was procured at a cost of US$32,000, and shipped from Taiwan to SVG at an additional amount of US$30,000, making the total value of the donation just over US$62,000.
