Sinkhole causes closure of lane on Bentick Square

Traffic congestion in the Bentick Square area is expected to be resolved this week with the reopening of the lane used for travel into Kingstown.

Last week, personnel from the Roads, Buildings and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) closed that portion of the road after a sinkhole was discovered.

A BRAGSA representative told SEARCHLIGHT on Monday that the road had to be closed because that portion of the Nelson Mandela Highway receives significant traffic from trucks and other heavy vehicles and it could have collapsed.

The representative said the sinkhole has already been filled, but they are allowing time for the cement to cure properly before allowing traffic to use the repaired area.

On Monday, the closure of the lane caused traffic to be backed up during the busy rush hour morning traffic which was made worse by the reopening of the nation’s schools.
