The Bailey bridges at Overland and Noel in the North Windward Constituency, will be officially opened on Thursday, May 11.

Word of this came from Parliamentary Representative for the constituency, Montgomery Daniel as he spoke on NBC Radio on May, 3 in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister.

He was at the time sitting in on the Prime Minister’s weekly Wednesday morning session as Dr. Gonsalves was out of state.

Motorists had removed the barriers and used the bridges during heavy rain two weeks ago.

Last week, Daniel, who is also Minister of Transport and Workssaid on radio that design flaws had delayed the official opening of the bridges.

This week however, the minister said that Cabinet made an assessment, based on information which was provided by the office of the chief engineer and took a decision to officially open the bridges.

“The bridges can be officially opened and whatever restorative work to be done can be done during that period of time,” Minister Daniel said on Wednesday.

He said the bridges are being opened ahead of the start of the EC$40 Sandy Bay Sea Defence Project.

It is anticipated that during this project, tonnes of heavy materials will need to be transported across these bridges.

Thursday’s official opening is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
