‘We’ve come a long way’, says pre-school mom who graduated from SVGCC with her teenage daughter
MEMBERS OF the Georgetown community are beaming with pride after a mother and her teenage daughter graduated in the same cohort from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) last week.
Jennifer Debique Glasgow and her daughter, Avisha Abby were both rewarded for their diligence at the graduation ceremony which took place at the Victoria Park, last Wednesday, September 28.
Glasgow told SEARCHLIGHT on Saturday, October 1 that she is “overjoyed” at having graduated from the SVGCC.
The mother of two revealed that she successfully completed a one year on-line certificate programme in Early Childhood Care and Development.
It was the first time that the college was offering the programme and Glasgow said she made the best use of the opportunity it presented.
An employee at the Stars pre-school in Georgetown, Glasgow managed to combine being a wife, mother and a full time worker with her studies.
One with a deep interest in early childhood education, Glasgow also did some training at the St Vincent Save the Children’s Fund (VINSAVE), and with the Adult and Continuing Education department.
“I really love working with children and I have been at the Stars Pre- School in Georgetown since 2009,”she added.
Glasgow who is originally from Chili Village, admitted that the online certificate course was a bit challenging “especially the technical part of it.”
“I was not computer literate when I began but my daughter, Avisha and friends always came to my assistance,” she explained.
“I also prayed a lot, and the good Lord also helped me.”
While doing her own studies Glasgow also made time to support and assist her daughter, Avisha who attended college as a full time student.
“We have come a long way and we thank God,” she said.
The new graduate recalled that her children lost their father in 2016 and the family had to deal with that grief.
Glasgow attended the Georgetown Government School and also the then Bishops College in Georgetown.
Her daughter, Avisha went to the Georgetown Government School and then the Girls’ High School before moving on to the SVGCC where she did Business Studies, Accounting.
“I am feeling good that my mom was able to graduate along with me,” Avisa declared.
“We encouraged and helped each other.
“I am very proud of my mother for her graduation from college.”
Avisha who is now 18 years old, is looking for employment in the field of accounting.
She wants to work for a while before going to university to continue her accounting studies.
Both mother and daughter are thankful to God and to their family and friends for their support and encouragement.
They believe that with God, all things are possible.
