Team SVG arrives in Birmingham for Commonwealth Games

Despite the chilly conditions in Birmingham, England, yesterday, July 25, members of the St Vincent and the Grenadines’ team at this year’s XXII Commonwealth Games received a warm welcome during the welcoming ceremony at the University of Birmingham.

When the national flag was being hoisted, members of the team were singing along to the strains of the National Anthem as the country was presented to the Mayor of the Games Village, David Moorcroft.

Claude Bascombe Jr., who is the Chief of Mission for the St Vincent and the Grenadines team, presented Moorcroft with a painting that captured one of the explosive eruptions of La Soufriere volcano in April, 2021.

In his brief remarks to Moorcroft, Bascombe Jr. said that such a presentation was most appropriate, to share the events the world.

Moorcroft, in reciprocity, gave Bascombe Jr. a copy of a compilation of songs specially recorded for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Following Monday’s Welcoming Ceremony, the Vincentian team and officials, will be among 72 contingents, who will be part of the glitzy Opening Ceremony on Thursday, July 28, planned for the Alexander Stadium.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is being represented by 21 athletes, who will compete in five disciplines: Aquatics (Swimming), Cycling, Squash, Table Tennis and Track and Field.

Three disciplines will have Vincentian participation, when competition begins in earnest on Friday, July 29.

On show is the all-female Table Tennis quartet of Jessica Mc Carter, Leah Cumberbatch, Shanecia

Delpesche and Unica Velox, as well as Squash players Jason Doyle, Jules Snagg, Othniel Bailey and Jada Ross, as the battles get going.

Also, on Friday, swimmers Abigail De Shong, Bryson George, Jamie Joachim, Kenale Alleyne, Shane Cadogan and Tia Gun-Munro, will take to the pool.

The Commonwealth Games, 2022, is set to end on August 8.
