Kuba of Sugar Mill finds sweet spot in CPEA

This country’s top student in the 2022 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) examinations, Kuba Francis is “one of the most focused, self motivated students” that Liz Cordice, the principal of the Sugar Mill Academy has ever met.

Francis, a recent graduate of the Sugar Mill Academy recorded an overall average of 98.2 per cent and was among students who scored the highest grades for Mathematics (100 per cent), and Science (96 per cent) in this year’s examinations.

“She does not give up. If she doesn’t understand something, she’s not leaving that classroom until she understands it and is able to complete it,’ Cordice told SEARCHLIGHT Monday, about the top performer, adding that she was extremely motivated and “the kind of student that any teacher would want to have because she challenges you to provide more always”.

Matthew Clarke, is another Sugar Mill Academy student who also ranked in the first 10 positions at CPEA this year.

Clarke placed third for boys and eighth overall. He gained the highest national score of 96 per cent for Language Arts.

The school’s principal told SEARCHLIGHT that Sugar Mill recorded 100 per cent passes for yet another year.

And she expressed pride in all the students who returned exceptional grades that would allow them to go to the secondary school of their choice.

Cordice said the school was able to cop six of the top 14 positions this year.

“We were really, really pleased. I can’t say totally surprised because the kids worked extremely hard; the parents, the teachers, the students and the entire staff body were just so supportive of them, helping out wherever they can,” she said, as she shared her belief that this kind of team work plays a significant role in the performance of students at the Sugar Mill Academy every year.

The principal also congratulated all the students who sat the 2022 CPEA.

“One of the mottos they have had since they entered Grade 6 is that what they put in, they will get out. I think each of them has realised that’s exactly how it worked for them,” she said.
