Three injured in robbery, gun attack

Three men have been left nursing injuries after a shooting and robbery incident in Kingstown Park on Wednesday night.

Radio personality, Carlyle Douglas, was shot in the groin area by men, who minutes before executed a robbery at a nearby shop owned by Wendy Bowman.

Bowman told SEARCHLIGHT on Thursday that he was at his shop a little after 9 p.m. with his friend Andy Gill, watching movies on a cellular phone.

The shopkeeper said he went downstairs, where he lives, and upon his return, there were three men with guns at the shop, manhandling Gill.

“They brought us in, they sat us down and they closed the doors. Once the doors were closed, I realized… shit… you know that kind of feeling?” he said. “So, I was surprised that they took what they took and just left, that they didn’t try to do nothing else to us, because they had the option to even go downstairs in my house.”

According to Bowman, the men took groceries valued over $1,000, more than $150 in cash and two cellular phones.

He added that the robbers were not wearing masks initially and that they put him and his friend to lie on the floor. The Kingstown Park resident also said that one of the men hit them in the head with the butt of his gun.

The house at Kingstown Park where radio personality Carlyle Douglas was shot in the porch when three gun-totting robbers ran past his residence.

“If you ask me, I guess he just wanted to be the ruffian in the crowd, because after he hit us, the other guy say don’t kill them, don’t kill them,” Bowman said. “It really wasn’t a hard blow, but it was enough. Blood start trickling down. It’s superficial wounds really, no stitches or nothing, but I thought we were complying already, we were just on the floor, ain’t resisting.”

The shopkeeper said that when the robbers left, they closed the doors behind them. And his friend suggested they stay in the shop for a little while.

He explained that while waiting, they heard two gunshots outside, and a third one followed seconds later.

“Couple minutes after, I heard somebody calling my name. I really thought the person was calling to check on me because they heard the shots, and after about three calls, the person say I’m shot. It was Carlyle Douglas,” Bowman said.
Douglas’ house is situated around the corner, where he has a view of the shop from his porch.

The shopkeeper told SEARCHLIGHT that Douglas said he heard the shots and looked through his door and when he came out on the porch, the men shot him as they were passing his house.

Bowman, who has operated his shop since 2013, explained that this is his third robbery related incident.

But, he is still puzzled as to why the men chose to shoot at Douglas.

“With him getting shot now, it’s like he wasn’t in this, he was just in his porch. These people got what they got already, why you have to shoot that guy?” he questioned. “Everything else could be replaced. We could’ve lost our lives and we didn’t lose our lives, we are thankful for that. One little superficial cut, both of us got that on our heads and everything could be replaced.”

Bowman said that they were all taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital by the police.

Both men were treated and released, but Douglas remained at hospital up to press time.
