Christopher siblings, Tia Wyllie, rule Victoria Park

Catchy lyrics, accompanied by attention grabbing props, dramatizations and dances, entertained the crowd gathered at the Victoria Park on Tuesday for this year’s Junior Calypso and Soca Monarch competition.

At the end of the competition, siblings Kristiana and Kristian Christopher enjoyed {{more}}their victories together.

While her brother captured the Primary School Junior Calypso Monarch title for the second consecutive year, Kristiana, who has competed in the competition for seven years, was crowned Junior Soca Monarch.

Kristiana told SEARCHLIGHT that she felt proud of herself.

“I feel very, very proud of myself,” said the 14-year-old student of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School. She also revealed that the song “Bulldozer,” which she performed, was written by Soca and Ragga Soca Monarch Gamal “Skinny Fabulous” Doyle.

Eight-year-old Kristian, who attends the Layou Government School, told SEARCHLIGHT that he felt happy about his sister’s win.

“I feeling happy how she win,” he said.

When he was asked to share his feelings on winning, he said that he felt great.

“Great! I feeling good.”

The lad gave credit to his father, Wallace Christopher, who wrote his song “Break the Silence,” which was about ending child abuse.

Tia Wyllie of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, who contested the Soca and Calypso competitions, is the bearer of the Secondary School Junior Calypso Monarch title.

Her performance of the song “Don’t Give Up,” written by St Clair Stevenson, earned her this position.

Wyllie told SEARCHLIGHT that she expected to win.

“I’m feeling very excited because I had the feeling that I would have won the crown,” said the New Prospect resident.

She also shared some advice to competitors in similar competitions.

“Don’t give up on yourselves, just have the faith in God and He will do it for you.”

In the Primary School Junior Calypso competition, Ziel Cain of the New Prospect Primary School placed second with her performance of the song “I’m Asking Why”. Daleann Nero of the Sandy Bay Primary School took third position with the song “My Dream”.

Kristiana Christopher of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School and Brianca Matthias of the Girls’ High School placed second and third respectively in the Secondary School Junior Calypso competition.

The second place position in the Junior Soca Monarch competition went to Delanzo Lavia of the Sandy Bay Secondary School and Sakura Lorraine of the Sandy Bay Primary School took the third position. (CA)
