Fugitive prisoner brought back from Trinidad and Tobago

A Trinidadian national who escaped from the Belle Isle Correctional Facility on February 22, 2014, is now back in St Vincent and the Grenadines in police custody.

Desmond “Cat” Pavy was brought back from Trinidad, following a successful extradition hearing there on January 21, 2015.{{more}}

He arrived at the ET Joshua Airport early Wednesday morning and was escorted to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by members of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) and Major Crimes Unit (MCU).

Pavy, 43, and fellow Trinidadians Jovel Esponoza and Terry Bannister were serving nine-year sentences on drug related charges, following a high-speed boat chase between them and the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Coastguard on May 24, 2011.

During the chase, the men threw bales of marijuana into the sea, but 11 of these, totalling 472 pounds, were recovered.

The men were sentenced in March 2012.

Following his escape, intelligence reports indicated that Pavy had been spotted in Trinidad and a request was immediately made by authorities here that Trinidad and Tobago officials detain Pavy under a provisional warrant of arrest.

That warrant of arrest was issued on March 21, 2014 by Acting Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington and Pavy was arrested on March 26, 2014 by Northern Division Task Force Officers, in collaboration with Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit officers.

Wellington signed the Warrant of Committal remanding Pavy into custody to await extradition. The Central Authority, under the direction of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan SC, secured Pavy’s committal for extradition.

It is still not clear if Pavy will face any additional charges for escaping, in addition to his original nine-year sentence.(KW)
