SVGCA makes special presentations at awards ceremony

Two persons who have contributed to the sport of cricket in St Vincent and the Grenadines over the years, were recognised last Saturday evening.

Jules Anthony and Wendell Glasgow were recognised by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, at its annual awards ceremony which took place at the Murray Heights hotel.{{more}}

Anthony, who received a special award, has been the fulcrum of the annual North Leeward Cricket competition, since 1995, when he initiated the Under-15 training programme.

One year later, Anthony was at the forefront of the North Leeward Under-15 Cricket competition involving eight villages.

This competition laid the ground for North Leeward to dominate the national zonal Under-15 competition, as well as breeding ground for young cricketers outside the locale who honed their skills as guest players.

Anthony recalled that on one occasion nine players from North Leeward were on the St Vincent and the Grenadines Under-15 team for the Windwards tournament.

Anthony also served as a committee member on the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, under then long standing President Lennox John.

Meanwhile, Glasgow, who received the Dr Kenneth Antrobus Award has been the coach of the United Survivors, the top women’s team for several years.

Other recipients of special awards on the evening were Japhina Joseph, Gidron Pope and Sunil Ambris.

Joseph, a 14-year-old fast bowler made the St Vincent and the Grenadines senior women’s team this year in the West Indies Cricket Board tournament in Dominica. She earned the Emerging Cricketer award.

Pope, a left handed opening batsman got his first taste of the St Vincent and the Grenadines senior team, making his debut in the Windwards tournament in St Lucia in October.

And, like Joseph and Pope, Ambris graduated to the senior Windwards team in this year’s regional four-day tournament, and scored a century on debut against Guyana and added another versus Jamaica in the final.

Ambris was called up to the High Performance team which faced Bangladesh A in a series of matches here in the Caribbean.

He was a member of the St Lucia Zouks in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League, then earned an elevation to the West Indies A team that toured Sri Lanka in October/ November. (RT)
