SVG Players Again

KFC SVG Players International has done it again! The mas band has won the Band of the Year title for the fourth time in a row, with their production “Expo Zaragoza, The World’s Extravaganza”, at Tuesday’s Mardi Gras at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

Displaying a colourful portrayal of regional and international countries, the mas band took the audience on a trip around the world, starting with their homeland St. Vincent and the Grenadines, then traveling to other countries displaying the vibrant golds of “Brasil Samba Fiesta” and the wildly exciting “Nigeria War Lords”. The band rose to the top with 563 points, gaining second place for best use of colour with 254 points.

Trailing close behind, The Guinness, Y De Lima, Hitz Fm 103.7 Blondie Bird and Friends took the second place spot with 547 points with their production “Cuisine”. The production featured vivid and creative portrayals of popular local drinks and dishes such as “Sorrel”, “Pelau”, “Bread Fruit and Jack Fish”, and the famous “Goat Cook”. The band’s use of colour also secured their third place spot in the best use of colour category, gaining 252 points.

Coming in third place was the Gatorade, The News Newspaper, Heineken Dragons with 532 points. Their eleven section presentation of Razzle Dazzle: Through the Eyes of a Dragon narrowly edged out Digicel Nelson Bloc in association with Hitz FM 103.7, who, with their Future Shock presentation and 530 points had to settle for fourth, while Mirage Productions presentation of Showtime placed fifth with 514 points.

In the uptown Judging, Players were relegated to second place, behind Nelson Bloc, who narrowly came out ahead by two points (223 to 221). Dragons took the third spot with 203 points, Blondie Bird and Friends fourth with 191 points and Mirage productions rounding out the top five with 187 points.

Also claiming titles on Tuesday were the Individuals of the Band. The top spot was taken by Atiba Lockhart of Blondie Bird and Friends, with their Wild Meet Cook Up, followed by Montezuma Last Emperor of the Aztecs, played by Gordon Boucher for Melbourne Artisans, with Players’ Jenilee Glasgow portraying St. Vincent My Homeland placing third. Fourth position was taken by Nelson Bloc, and Singer Lynx Mas Camp secured fifth position.(OS)
