Man from Owia fined thousands on marijuana charge
A 40 year old labourer of Owia on a marijuana charge was ordered by the court to pay over $4,000 dollars or face time in prison.
Iran Sutherland appeared in the Kingstown Magistrates Court on Wednesday, March 9 to answer to a charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
The police say they arrested and charged Sutherland on March 8 at Owia when he allegedly had in his possession 4657 grammes of cannabis with the intent to supply it to another.
When he appeared in Court on Wednesday, Sutherland pleaded guilty as charged. He was fined $4,400.00 and ordered to pay $1,400.00 forthwith or serve a four month term of imprisonment. The balance of the fine is to be paid by May 31, in default of which he will spend six months in prison.
