Redemption Sharpes teen caught with stolen iPhone

Redemption Sharpes teen caught with stolen iPhone

An IPhone stolen at the Envy Night Club last Friday has been recovered after it was traced to Redemption Sharpes in the possession of a 17-year-old.

The teenager, Kevin Durrant, was arrested after the matter was reported, and faced legal consequences for his actions at the Serious Offences Court (SOC) on Monday, August 24.

Durrant is said to have been in the company of the owner of the phone, 24-year-old Arnos Vale resident Tonya Audain, as she worked at the entrance of the club on Friday night. Although he was a stranger to Audain, the teen was a friend of her co-worker.

At approximately 10pm, all three were at the entrance, when a customer approached. In order to put a hand band on the customer, Audain gave Durrant her phone to hold. However, when she turned around, the 17-year-old had disappeared, and was not to be found inside of the club either.

The next morning, Saturday, August 22, Audain recommenced her efforts to find the teen, and tracked her phone to the Redemption Sharpes area. She found Durrant, and he handed over her phone to her.

Nevertheless, the IPhone 6, valued at $600, had been wiped of all the information on it. Additionally, the black glass phone case, $30; screen protector, $30; Digicel SIM Card, $15; and $150EC in cash were missing. Audain was told by Durrant that he threw away these items, and that there was no money in the phone case.

The matter was reported to the police and the young man later volunteered a statement admitting to the offence of theft.

At court Durrant stuck to his story that there was no cash, but explained that one of the items broke, and another he burnt.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne ordered compensation of $225 to be paid by the defendant to Audain, with the same speed that he burnt, tossed away and broke up the items.

The phone was in good condition, albeit without any of the memories. Therefore, restitution was ordered for the IPhone 6.

Finally, the Redemption Sharpes youngster is bonded in the sum of $900, with a default prison sentence of six months should he breach the conditions of the bond.
