Three allegedly found with 1.73 million dollars worth of ganja
Police are estimating 644 pounds of marijuana allegedly found in the possession of three men at Fancy Point, to be worth 1.73 million dollars in street value.
Counsel for two of the defendants, attorneys Grant Connell and Dr Linton Lewis, did not agree, and made this known.
“That is nonsense,” Connell, repeated twice, adding “your honour knows that too,” addressing Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias. He muttered as he sat down that ‘they’ think it to be Tortola or Barbados.
Lewis submitted that he was not sure how the prosecution was able to arrive at the value, and that sometimes the value is different based on the jurisdiction. He asked that the chief magistrate not take that into consideration while setting bail for the men.
The chief magistrate stated that if it comes to sentencing, then the value would come into consideration.
Therefore, Marvin ‘Squat’ Alexander, Mark Bristol and Curton Allen, were given bail in the sum of $140,000 for the four charges laid against them.
These are that last Friday, at Fancy Point, the three had in their possession a controlled drug, to wit 292,376 g of cannabis with intent to supply to another; that they did attempt to export the drug; and that they had it in their possession for the purpose of drug trafficking. Between February 21 and 22, at Fancy Point, they are further charged that they did conspire to traffick the cannabis.
The charges were laid indictibly and the trio was not required to plea.
Bristol is a 48-year-old mason from McCarthy, Allen is a 40-year-old diver originally from Union Island, and Alexander is a 43-year-old sea captain originally of Union Island but living in Diamond.
All of the defendants indicated that the police station closest to them was the Stubbs police station, and therefore they are required to report there on Mondays and Thursdays between 6am and 6pm.
Stop notices were placed at ports of entry and travel documents are to be surrendered.
The matter was adjourned to March 15.
