Police officer to answer charge of ammunition theft

An officer of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVPF) is scheduled to appear before the Serious Offences Court on March 1, after being charged with theft of ammunition.{{more}}

Police Constable Mayon Spring of Cane Grove pleaded not guilty to three charges when he appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday.

He was charged that “between 27 and 29 November at Calliaqua in St Vincent and the Grenadines in the public service and being charged with the performance of the duty of a police officer by virtue of such employment corruptly obtained 25 rounds of 5.56 ammunition for [him]self on the account of an omission by [him] in discharge of the duty of [his] office.”

He was further charged that on that said date he stole 25 rounds of 5.56 ammunition and was also charged with the possession of that ammunition without a licence that was valued at EC$26.50, property of the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Senior prosecutor Adolphus Delpesche did not object to bail. He did, however, ask for surety and that all Spring’s travel documents be surrendered to the court and that he report at least once per week to a police station.

Chief magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias set a composite bail in the sum of $25,000 and ordered that he is to surrender all travel documents to the court.

Browne-Matthias also ordered that stop notices be placed at all ports of exit and that Spring report to the Layou Police Station every Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Ten witnesses are likely to appear for the Crown.
