Police officers warned not to let prisoners walk across courtroom

Chief Magistrate Sonya Young has warned police officers that they will be held in contempt of court if they continue to allow prisoners to walk across the courtroom unescorted.{{more}}

An annoyed Young lashed out at police officers yesterday, at a sitting of the Serious Offences Court, after prisoners were seen walking across the courtroom, heading towards where prisoners are normally seated.

“What is going on here? The next time I see a prisoner walk across the court like that, I am going to hold the police officer in contempt,” the magistrate warned.

“The prosecutor’s back is turned, why are they allowing prisoners to walk across my courtroom?”

Concerns have been raised by the court in recent times about police officers not escorting prisoners to their seats.(KW)
