A Christmas Message

by Brenton Charles, Superintendent of Prisons (Ag)

For Christians worldwide, Christmas is a time for many things, not least among which is the time for reflection. As we reflect on the reason for the season, let us not be distracted or deceived by the need for materialistic acquisitions of the world, by the busyness of our lives, the lack of concern for our fellow men or living lives in constant competition as we try to outdo our neighbours.{{more}}

What we have instead, is a responsibility to be new creatures in Christ and good stewards of the gifts with which we have been endowed. We are not all called to lead. For those who can teach, let us teach. For those who can, let us encourage one another. In what we have received, let us share with those who are less fortunate.

My fellow Vincentians, let us stop awhile and remember that God is good. It is because of His grace that we are. In this most anticipated season of the Christian calendar, let us focus on what we can achieve through the one who gives us strength.

As we approach the end of 2014 and look forward to a new year, let us be more tolerant, kinder and more forgiving in our interactions with others. This is especially true in the case of prison inmates who, having served their sentences behind bars, re-enter a society which is not welcoming. They are made to feel like outcasts and many are unable to cope, often returning to a life of crime. Let us love one another and do well by each other.

From the staff at Her Majesty’s Prisons, my family and on my own behalf, let me wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
