Which is better: Going viral or being impactful?

by Candice Sealey

A POST caught my attention whilst browsing a few weeks ago.The author of the post noted that going viral fades, but impact lasts. The post definitely caught my attention and got me thinking, what really matters? Being impactful or going viral? In an era where content is constantly being created, shared and consumed, there is always the temptation to chase viral moments. Seeing your brand or post spreading rapidly across the internet is what it’s all about right?

Not necessarily. Sometimes, the viral effect is shortlived. Once the excitement fades, brands are left to wonder:What did we really gain? Here is why it’s best to not solely focus on going viral.

Reality Check:What is Impact?

Impact goes beyond numbers. It is about creating meaningful connections, fostering loyalty and making a lasting impression on your audience. Impact is felt when your message solves a problem, educates, or inspires action. It may not always result in explosive metrics, but it builds trust, credibility and longterm value.

Impact vs Going Viral: Key differences Longevity: Viral content has a short shelf life, but impactful content has lasting relevance.

Purpose: Viral content can be random and unpredictable, whilst impactful content is strategic and intentional.

Which Should You Aim For?

Many experts agree that while there is nothing inherently wrong with going viral, brands should not make it their primary goal.

Instead, aim to create impactful content that aligns with your brand’s values and speaks to your audience’s needs. Ask yourself: Will this content make a difference? Will it educate, inspire, or provide value?

How to Prioritize Impact

Know Your Audience: Understand who you are speaking to and what matters to them.

Solve Problems: Focus on content that provides solutions, educates, or inspires.

Tell a Story: Stories are memorable and create emotional connections.

Engage Consistently: Consistent, meaningful interactions lead to lasting relationships.

Measure Beyond Likes: Track metrics that indicate value, such as comments, shares with thoughtful captions and customer feedback.

The next time you create content, ask yourself: are you aiming for a moment or a meaningful connection?
