Artificial Intelligence (AI), ChatGPT and what it means for your marketing!

If you’ve been hiding a rock over the past few months, allow me to introduce you to the future of Marketing where artificial intelligence and human expertise come together. The key words being ‘come together’; there are some who think people will be replaced by ChatGPT but the truth is, you won’t be replaced by it but you will be replaced by someone using it!

ChatGPT is being touted as a game changer and from what I have seen, it most definitely is! Its adoption rate surpassed even Instagram, Facebook, and Netflix. ChatGPT crossed one million users within five days of its launch and had 100 million users within two months! According to Life Architect, it can help you write bills (politics), generate ideas and examples, explain complicated texts into layman’s terms and even get an MBA! In fact, according to ABC News, sophisticated generative AI tools such as ChatGPT have implications for the 2024 Presidential campaign and elections, particularly because “some tools can now create cloned human voices, hyper-realistic images, videos and audio in seconds”; combine this with social media algorithms, fake and digitally created content has the potential to spread exponentially targeting specific audiences and “potentially taking campaign dirty tricks to a new low.”

Still wondering what I’m talking about? here’s some insight.

What is ChatGPT?

A free informational resource (with encyclopedic knowledge), like Google but different that comes in the form of an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. You ask questions and it spits out answers based on your input. According to its creator, Open AI, it can “answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.”

How does it work?

ChatGPT has its own brain so to speak. As a language model technology, it accumulates large amounts of text data from the internet: books, articles, websites, and blog posts among other things. To generate your required ideas/text to help you market your business, you need to use a ChatGPT prompt which is text you use to elicit the response you need. To get the most out of it, you should treat it like a human assistant; you won’t get great outputs without the appropriate inputs and there lies one of the reasons why this new tool is not the end all; just like everything else there is a strategy behind the way you write your prompts to get answers, so if you put in rubbish, for the lack of a better word, well that’s the output you will get!

What does this have to do with marketing your business/brand?

If you have ever done a dynamic search ad campaign in Google ads, you have used AI in Marketing. Three ways in which you can use ChatGPT in Marketing include:

  • To generate content including marketing copy for your emails, product descriptions, social media captions, headlines & more. It helps to improve your existing content for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) but that’s only possible with effective prompts.
  • ChatGPT can help you generate a survey or a poll to get to know your audience and collect customer feedback.
  • Content ideas – This tool can help you get ideas for blogs, guides, eBooks and more. You can ask it for post ideas based on topics or existing content or curate for example the top five articles on a topic.

You may be thinking this sounds too good to be true and yes you’re right! As great as it is, ChatGPT is not a replacement for a teacher, a lawyer, and in this article’s context, a marketing consultant, or a marketing representative in your business. It is advanced technology but other than what you tell it, it doesn’t have the full picture of your business/brand so as to give 100% reliable answers e.g., you may decide that this is the answer to you finding a marketing strategy for your brand/business. You create a prompt asking ChatGPT for the best marketing strategies for a business and it spits out a list; remember the best strategy for your business also depends on your specific goals. There are many marketing strategies that can be used for a business but the effective one is the one that’s based on what you are trying to achieve. You may get closer to the answer with the right prompt but even so, it won’t be fully accurate; hence the reason why I initially said “where artificial intelligence and human expertise come together like never before” Before you fully embrace ChatGPT as your sole marketing partner, be sure to read Part II on this interesting topic next week!
