Resolving Conflicts

Resolving problems quickly and in a sensible way is essential in the workplace. Small concerns can balloon into big issues when the right problem-solving techniques are not applied. Conflicts often arise when two or more people have different views about a matter or someone was violated. Regardless of the circumstances, it is important to strive to resolve the issue and continue to do your job and act professionally.{{more}}

Here are a few ways to look at problems and come up with solutions quickly and safely.

1. When someone offends or disagrees with you, try not to lose your temper. Walk away, calm down, and think about how you would like to approach the person. It must be a calm conversation.

2. Talk over the problem with a neutral party, such as a mediator, and brainstorm ways to resolve the problem.

3. Never try to resolve a problem when you are angry, frustrated or tired. Take a break, get rested, and then come back to it. Don’t try to ignore it or forget, as the issue may come up again if it is not resolved.

4. Think about the results you want. It is difficult to vow never to speak to a co-worker again. Be sensible and make sound decisions.

5. Try to see the problem from the other person’s point of view. For the most part, people are doing the best they know how. It doesn’t mean their way is right; it just means they are using the problem-solving methods that they know to cope with the situation. So, try not to pass judgment too quickly.

6. Violence, cursing, verbal abuse or getting even are never options!
