Graduation message
Most students look forward to graduation as it indicates the end of one level of formal or informal study. It is more like a rite of passage and it brings relatives and friends together with persons traveling great distances to be part of the celebration. Parents usually do not spare any expense in turning out their graduates.{{more}} This is an occasion that provides a taste of the happiness that comes with success.
Graduation takes the form of a formal ceremony that is followed by a ball or special lunch or dinner. At the ceremony, motivational speakers are brought in to reflect on the past and to project the future. One of the most popular graduations is that which takes place at the end of the secondary school stint. Graduates go off either to institutions of higher learning or to the work force. It is those who are entering the work force that I wish to address.
Orientation to the world of work
In this economic climate, it may be difficult to obtain a job immediately and as a new graduate, you will be competing for the same job with many other graduates who have similar academic qualifications. Make sure you have at least two persons who can testify to your good character and personality. Employers tend to look for the best person, that is, a person who appears to be disciplined, intelligent, willing to learn and who is capable of meeting the needs of the organization. Most employers usually provide some training and you will be required to serve a probationary period. For you, it should be a time to sharpen your observation skills and to show that you are capable of performing. If you display good work ethics, you would earn your place in the organization and be on the road to success.
Good work ethics
First and foremost, you are expected to be punctual and regular. If you were punctual and regular at school, it would not be difficult to continue to do so in the world of work. If you were delinquent then you would have to make a big turn around. Apart from illness or emergency, if you have any other reason to be away from the job, you would be sending your employer the message that you are not interested or committed to your job.
As a new worker, you would be constantly under observation and your ability to get along with other workers would make you a good team player. If you have to deal with the public, then you must be helpful, polite and patient. You are expected to be dependable, honest and efficient, as your supervisors would remember these qualities when promotion time comes around. You need to put a great deal of energy into the job itself making sure you observe all the rules and procedures related to your area of specialization. Have your little notebook to jot down new information. Be respectful and courteous to all.
Be the best
Regardless of the nature of your job, treat it as special because it enables you, at least, to obtain the basic amenities in life. Max Ehrmann in the famous âDesiderataâ tells us to âbe interested in our career however humble, because it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.â Your contribution is important to the success of the organization. My advice to you is to be the best in whatever you do.
