New vehicle number plates lettering system announced

From next month, Vincentians will begin to see vehicles on the road with an additional letter on their number plates.

That is because the existing lettering system is approaching its end.

This explanation was given by Deputy Prime Minister, Montgomery Daniel on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, when he spoke on NBC radio.

Daniel, who is also Minister of Transport and Works said the new system will take effect from June 1, 2025.

This new system will be put into effect following Cabinet’s recently approved changes to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations, allowing for an additional letter ‘A’ to be added onto number plates.

The Minister spoke of a meeting of the Transport Board on March 31, 2025 where this matter was given much attention.

He explained that at this time, the present numbering system of vehicles is coming to an end. The system, which started with the letters

‘PA’ is now down to ‘PZ’ and is fast approaching the 999th vehicle which will be the final in this series.

Minister Daniel said after the matter was discussed at the level of the Transport Board, documents were sent to the Attorney’s General Chambers for changes to the made to the regulations.

These changes were approved by Cabinet two weeks ago.

Therefore, after registering the 999th vehicle in the lettering: PA, RA, TA, HA, FA and LCA, the new lettering : PAA, RAA, TAA, HAA, FAA and LCAA will come into effect.

When the changes take effect, the lettering PAA will start with the number 1, and will go right up to 999 before it changes again and will continue in alphabetical order.
