Sailing Week serving up plenty of superlatives

WHEN THE 2026 SVG Sailing Week concludes next Monday, April 6, on Bequia, it will culminate nine days of riveting sailing, fun activities, and cultural events, both on the mainland as well as in the Grenadines.

DR. KISHORE SHALLOW

The Week got going last Sunday, March 29, with the Junior Sailing events at Coconut Grove, Canash.

After a sun-drenched day on the waters but in ideal sailing conditions, the rewards came as the top performers were compensated.

Winning the Skiff Class was Ira Hadley, ahead of Madison Alcock, with the Optimist Class taken by Solomya Kerechanyn, and Jacob Hornsey, the runner up.

The Topaz Class was won by Zach Mc the combination of Sky Cato and Lily Punnett. Docking third was Mya Gun Munroe and Isla Mitchell.

Joshua Weindhart topped the ILCA 4 Class. Second was Akira Brown and Joseph Hadley was third.

The ILCA 6 Class was pouched by Kai Marks-Dasent, with second place going to Scarlett Hadley, and Benjamin Cyrus was third.

Following Sunday’s sail off, the Week saw a Junior Regatta taking place on Mayreau, on March 31.

April 1, witnessed the hosting of the international race from Canouan to Bequia.

Then from April 2 to 5, Bequia takes center stage with the Multi-Yacht races, as well as the traditional Double Enders, the Coconut Boat races, and the Junior Sailing showcase races.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Sunday, March 29, 2026, President of the SVG Sailing Association, Jenny Trumble, highlighted the benefits of Sailing.

“Let’s celebrate Sailing Week, make it a destination for our beautiful islands, for our stunning seas, but let also journey into the opportunities to grow, the training on offer in marine industry open so that we can open those opportunities for every single youth in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” a pumped up Trumble said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Sustainable Development, Dr Kishore Shallow, touched on the significance of the Sailing Week, especially to the people of the Grenadines.

Shallow emphasised that sailing “has historic value to people of Bequia and to St Vincent and the Grenadines, and we understand the tremendous potential in the Sailing andYachting industry and most importantly, the kids”.

Sailing Week is seen as a major economic boost for St Vincent and the Grenadines.
