Dozens attracted to Bicycle Festival
THE USUAL CALM of Bedford Street on a Sunday afternoon was disrupted, but in a welcomed manner, last Sunday March 29, 2026, as more than 60 BMX riders occupied the space.
The occasion was the hosting of a Bicycle Festival, undertaken by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union. Part of the festival involved the cyclists performing stunts and engaging in quick sprint races.
The Cycling Union also used the opportunity to distribute helmets to some of the riders, whilst passing on safety tips.
It was a pleasing outcome for the executive of the SVG Cycling Union, and moreso its president, Shimano Bailey.
Beaming from ear to ear, Bailey disclosed that he was quite satisfied with the participation.
“To be honest we were not looking for such a large turnout. They really showed up. It was good to see some young females being part of the afternoon’s activities. This was most appreciated.”
Bailey was equally delighted with the mobilization of the cyclists and the spectators who turned up at the venue.
“Whilst they may appear ad hoc, there are some budding leaders among them, hopefully with time we can get a few of them transitioning into mainstream cycling; that is one of our overall objectives,” Bailey stated.
“ We were also pleased with the number of persons seeing the happenings and joined in as spectators.”
The SVG Cycling Union believes that last Sunday’s showing was a good launch pad for the organization to show the need for a facility to have that group of cyclists showcase their talents.
Bailey said that on the table is a proposal for a pump track which will facilitate the BMX riders.
