Football Federation’s Dr Richards receives FIFA Recognition Award
DR. DWIGHT RICHARDS, a distinguished figure in football medicine, has been officially recognized by the International Football Federation (FIFA), as “Sports Physician of theYear – Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”. And, this recognition was formally conferred on him on Monday, February 23, 2026 in Curacao.
The St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) said in a release that the honour comes as a testament to his groundbreaking contributions to orthopaedics, traumatology, and evidence-based practice in football medicine. The announcement, issued by FIFA’s Regional Office, CONCACAF, highlights Dr. Richards’ scholarly achievements, including the publication of his thesis on FIFA’s official platform, and his unwavering commitment to player welfare. His recognition was formally conferred at the opening tournament’s Gala of the CONCACAF Under-20 Men’s Championship which is taking place in Curaçao, where he was invited to deliver a five-to-seven-minute speech alongside the St.Vincent and the Grenadines senior male delegation.
In addition to this prestigious award, Dr. Richards has been appointed as FIFA Sports Medicine Orthopaedic representative for the international fixture between Mexico and the Dominican Republic carded for Sunday, February 28, 2026, a role that underscores his fluency in Spanish and his professional excellence at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.
President of the SVGFF Otashie Spring, praised the achievement, stating: “Dr. Richards’ recognition by FIFA is not only a personal triumph but also a proud moment for St.Vincent and the Grenadines. His dedication to player welfare and his scholarly contributions have elevated our nation’s standing in global football medicine.
