Two podium finishes for SVG at Tortola Masters Squash event
ROY DE FREITAS copped the men’s 45 and Over title, but Othneil Bailey had to settle for the runner-up spot in the men’s 35 and Over, at the inaugural Meridian Pan American Masters Championships held at the Tortola Squash Club from November 13 to 16, 2025.
De Freitas eased past Celv Velarde with some comfort winning, 3-0 (117, 11-1, 11-6). However, he had to dig deep in the semi-finals against Marco Zenteno, as the match went the distance, but De Freitas trumped 3-2 (11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 16-14) in a humdinger.
De Freitas also overcame Peter Pirtheesingh in the final, winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 12-10).
Fellow Vincentian, Bailey, defeated Horacio Guerra in straight games, 11-3, 11-3, 11-1; ousted Manuel Luarca 11-5, 11-2, 11-3 ; and swept aside Christopher Pease 11-6,11-2, 11-6.
Bailey’s fortunes were however, derailed by Joseph Chapman.The Vincentian lost three games to zero, as Chapman romped to an uncomplicated 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 win and inked his name on the age category.
Keith Boyea, the other Vincentian participant, competed in the Men’s 65 and Over age group. Boyea suffered defeats at the hands of Harold Meneses 11-9, 11-4, 13-11; and Bert Kornyei, 7-11, 12-10, 6-11, 3-11.
