Tennis President calls for unity
PREYA GRIFFTH,THE current President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association, has called on persons within the local tennis fraternity to purge themselves of their differences and work together for the betterment of the sport.
Griffith made her plea when she spoke at the Awards Ceremony of the Fuzion Tennis Academy last Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Student’s Hall of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College main campus at Villa.
Griffith, who was installed as president last March, noted that from the get-go, she was cognisant of the ever-present interpersonal fractures.
“I have seen first-hand the immense potential that exists, not just within our players but within our clubs and academies. But I have also seen how easily that potential can be undermined by division,” Griffith noted, “Let me candid, some leaders in our small tennis community have, at times, chosen to operate in a silo, distancing themselves from the broader tennis community and the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association,” pointing out that the actions of the adults are hurting the fabric of tennis.
“We cannot afford this. Our players cannot afford this, and they certainly don’t deserve this. If we say we love this sport, then our actions must reflect that love. That means collaboration; that means communication; that means making room at the table for uncomfortable conversations, and walking away with common ground, not hardened positions”, the SVGTA President advocated.
Drawing a reference to the President of the International Tennis Federation-Dvid Haggerty who said that once there is controversy, there is opportunity, Griffith called for immediate action.
“I believe this is our opportunity, not just to smooth over disagreements, but to genuinely build something better”.
