Union Island Secondary School receives funds from Sailing expedition
The Union Island Secondary School is the beneficiary of $1,500, thanks to the heroics and social conscience of Kai Marks Dasent of the Vincy Sailing Club.
On May 24, 2025, the 14-year-old Marks- Dasent undertook an incredible 42-nautical mile sail from mainland St. Vincent to Union Island.
He completed the journey in 6 hours and 3 minutes, with an average speed of 6.3 knots.
His mission was to raise funds in support of both his sailing club and the students of the Union Island Secondary School preparing to sit their 2025 CSEC exams.
The school was ravaged by the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024, resulting in students being relocated to the mainland.
Inspired by the heroic efforts of Marks-Dasent, the General Employers Cooperative Credit Union (GECCU) donated a matching $1,500 to cover half the cost of a CSEC examination fee for each student writing the exams this year.
