Windward’s women’s football returns to SVG
AFTER A SIX-YEAR hiatus, the Windward Islands Senior Women’s Football Tournament is back, scheduled to be held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from September 14 – 20, 2025, with three Windward Islands teams – Dominica, St Lucia, and host, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, along with Barbados.
Chair of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Women’s Committee, Yolande London, said at the tournament’s media launch on Tuesday night, September 9, 2025, at the La Vue Hotel, that “the competition will be played in a round robin format… everyone plays each other and at the end of that round the two top teams that is the teams placed first and second with the highest points will then face each other to determine the champion”.
She also outlined that the two teams with the least number of points will play each other for the third and fourth place respectively.
The games will be played at two venues. The first round of matches will be played at the Victoria Park, and the third place and finals will be played at the Arnos Vale Sports complex. On the opening day, Sunday September, 14, Barbados and St Lucia will battle from 5:00 p.m., and host St.Vincent and the Grenadines will clash with Dominica at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, September, 16, Dominica and St Lucia will meet at 5:00 p.m., and from 7:00 p.m., St.Vincent and the Grenadines will do battle with Barbados.
Thursday’s third day of action will see Barbados and Dominica doing battle from 5:00 p.m., and St. Vincent and the Grenadines versus St Lucia from 7:00 p.m.
Then on Saturday, September 20, the action moves to the Arnos Vale Sports Complex for the third place play-off at 5:00 p.m., and the finals from 7:00 p.m.
Also addressing the media launch, St.Vincent and the Grenadines’ team manager, Osana Boyea, revealed the names of the members of the SVG squad.The players selected are Melanie Stowe, Ashante Browne, Kelisha Bowens,Vinesha Johnson, Kendra Findlay, Leona Barrow, Nevaeh Richards, Danel Creese, Cherish Laborde, Ettrisha Jeffrey, Kacy-Ann Providence, Kizzy-Ann Providence, Zaneke George, Rea Dawn Nanton, Azumi Quow, Chelsea Cordice, Nasheeka Prescod, Jayana Glasgow, Asanteni Charles, and Marsha Marshall.
The last WIFA Senior Women’s Football Tournament was held in St Lucia from June 30- July 6, 2019, and was won by St.Vincent and the Grenadines.
“We are gathered here tonight to celebrate a significant and exciting development … the return to active competition of the Windward Islands Football Association. More importantly, we are here to officially acknowledge the upcoming WIFA Women’s Championship 2025…”, President of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, Otashie Spring said at the media launch.
“This competition means a great deal to us.
Firstly, to this current SVGFF administration, it represents a step in the right direction, fully aligned with our strategic plan for football development.We campaign for WIFA’s revival because we believe in the value of consistent regional competition to elevate our game,” he noted.
“ Secondly, for WIFA, this tournament marks a resurrection of football development at the sub-regional level, a much needed reawakening of the structure and the spirit that once bonded and built the Windward Islands footballing community.”
Spring pointed out what this upcoming tournament would mean for the St.Vincent and the Grenadines senior women’s football team.
“This is a competition that will provide the essential preparation and match readiness as they continue to prepare for the official fixtures in the CONCACAF Qualifiers coming up in November (2025) here in St.Vincent and the Grenadines,” he noted.
“Fourthly…let me say this clearly, that this administration has your back. We value you and we intend to do for you what we do for the men.Women’s football is not an afterthought, it is a cornerstone of our vision for a balanced and a thriving football culture.”
Minister of Sports, Orande Brewster spoke of his immense pride in SVG hosting the tournament.
