Eight teams in revived church TT tournament

The race for honours in the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association (SVGTTA) inter-church table tennis tournament served off last Monday night at the West St George Secondary School.

Divided into two groups are Layou Miracle Church, Faith Temple, Harvest Bible Chapel and Church of Christ, which make up Group One, with Kingdom Life Ministries, Arnos Vale Methodist Church, Southern Adventist Church and the Diamond Evangelical Church, the entrants in Group Two.

President of the SVGTTA Orville Haslam welcomed the organization back to the tournament and commended the association’s public relations officer Sean Stanley for playing the lead role in its revival.

It was Stanley, through the Sean Stanley Table Tennis Academy, who initiated the inter-church tournament almost 10 years ago.

Stanley, at last Monday’s opening ceremony, joined Haslam in ushering back the tournament, stating that the “association is bigger than the academy (Sean Stanley Table Tennis Academy), so we have to give way”.

Both of Monday’s opening matches ended in straight sets victories for the Church of Christ and Arnos Vale Methodist Church.

Church of Christ blanked Harvest Bible Chapel, 3-0.

Junior Cox beat Pastor Al Blake 11-7, 14-12, while Mark Charles outpointed Devon Blake 11-8, 11-2 and Mirac Creese defeated Ajani Hinds 17-15, 9-11, 11-4.

Also chalking up a 3-0 win was the Arnos Vale Methodist Church, which stopped the Southern Adventist Church.

Akeil De Roche saw off Dr Junior Ackie 12-10, 11-6; Dureese Nelson handed Anthony Patterson an 11-4, 11-4 defeat and Joshua Joseph beat Philbert Prescod 11-3, 12-10.

The tournament is set for completion next Tuesday, February 20.
