Doyle wins squash title in Barbados
Vincentian Jason Doyle went into the backyard of his Barbadian counterparts to capture the title of Menâs Squash Champion of the Barbados Olympic Associationâs, Barbados Independence Invitational Games (BIIG).
Doyle ousted last yearâs winner Rhett Cumberbatch, as they âlit upâ the Barbados Squash Club, last Sunday.
Cumberbatch had taken the first two sets at 11-9 and 11-5, before Doyle pulled out all the stops to win the next three sets, 11-9, 11-4 and 11-9.
It was Doyleâs second come-from-behind win, as he had to do the same against Shawn Simpson, as they slugged it out in five sets.
It could have been an all-Vincentian final, but Jules Snagg, St Vincent and the Grenadinesâ No 2 ranked male player, was beaten 3-2 by Cumberbatch, when they met in the other half of the semi-finals.
Snagg, though, did not leave Barbados empty-handed, as he defeated Simpson 12-10 12-10, 8-11, 13-11, 7-11, 11-7.
Meanwhile, it was all-Vincentian in the consolation match, which ended in triumph for Othneil Bailey, who saw off Kevin Hannaway, three sets to two, 11-8, 4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5.
The Vincentian team which travelled to Barbados also included Omari Wilson.
Another St Vincent and the Grenadines team, comprising Under-13 players, will head out to Barbados this weekend to pit their skills against the Barbadians.
