SVG get second, fourth places at Caribbean Junior Squash Championships

Kai Bentick placed second in the male Under-17 and Giovanni Miller-Alexander was fourth in the females Under-15 of the Digicel Caribbean Junior Individual Squash Championships, played in Guyana last week.

Bentick, after coming through unscathed in the quarter-finals and semifinals over Trinidadian Kobie Khan and Guyana’s Daniel Islam, faltered in the final.

Facing up against Barbadian Khamal Cumberbatch, Bentick was unable to continue his form, losing 7-11, 4-11, 6-11.

Meanwhile, Miller-Alexander, after getting past Trinidad and Tobago’s Chloe Walcott in the quarter-finals, lost to Chelsea Samuel of Barbados in the semi-finals.

And, when she encountered Samuel again in the third and fourth play-off, Miller-Alexander was unable to turn the table, losing 5-11, 7-11, 6-11.

Completing SVG’s participation were Mikal Quashie and Jaydon Williams.

Quashie, who is the highest world ranked Caribbean Under-19 player, did not live up to his status, as his lone success was in the round of 16, when he stopped the Cayman Islands’ Christian Dube, 9-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-7.

But Quashie was defeated by Tahjia Lumley of Jamaica in the quarter-finals and by Reginald Brewster of Barbados in the consolation quarter-finals.

Williams, in the male Under-11, mirrored Quashie by seeing off Barbados’ Armaan Suleman 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 in the round of 16, but lost in both the quarter-finals and the consolation quarterfinals.

The SVG team was accompanied by Anne Miller – manager and James Bentick – coach.

The young squash players’ attention shifts to preparations for the World Junior Circuit events later this year.
