Roxell John removed from national Under-19 cricket team

Roxell John has been axed as assistant coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Under-19 male cricket team and has subsequently resigned his post as a committee member of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association Inc (SVGCA).

John learnt of his fate via an email sent to him by president of the SVGCA Inc Kishore Shallow, dated June 21.

Shallow in explaining the decision, wrote: “In light of the recent breach of the confidentially of our meetings and the public declaration of your lack of confidence in the current executive body of the SVGCA Inc., we are forced as an executive to reconsider your appointment with the Under-19 team that will travel to St. Lucia on 25th June 2017.”

John was set to depart St Vincent and the Grenadines this Sunday with the team, whose management team also includes Irvin Warrican – head coach and Parnell Browne – manager.

In tendering his resignation as a committee member of the SVGCA Inc John stated, “In light of the development of the day.

Please note that I am resigning with immediate effect as Committee member of the SVG Cricket Association.”

Shallow, in further explaining the decision to John, stated, “Executive members have expressed considerable concerns about your questionable motive at this point, and we cannot take such a risk, which could affect the performance of our young players and the team on a whole…This position is obviously an unfortunate one, and we regret any inconvenience caused.”

John was part of the management team which saw St Vincent and the Grenadines retain the Winlott Inc Windward Islands Under-19 tournament last year, when it was hosted here.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines team named for the 2017 edition in St Lucia are seven new faces in Jadiel Chance, Rayon Williams, Rondell Williams, Sealroy Williams, Jahiel Walters, Rayshorn John and Jeremy Haywood.

They join those who were part of the triumphant unit last year when the tournament was hosted here by St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Among them are Jeremy Layne, who takes up the captaincy, with Dillon Douglas vice-captain, along with Tijorn Pope, Urnel Thomas, Tilron Harry and Sealron Williams, the twin brother of Sealroy.

The two-day tournament sees SVG opening up against Dominica at Gros Islet, starting Monday and versus host St Lucia at the same venue, June 28 and 29.
