ESPN’s commentator gets wrath from Vincentians via social media

Ian Darke, the ESPN commentator who carried the play by play commentary for ESPN in the World Cup qualifier last Friday between host the USA and St Vincent and the Grenadines at the Busch Stadium in St Louis, Missouri, received the wrath of some Vincentians via social media.{{more}}

During his commentary, Darke sought to show the disparity in the two teams, referring to team USA as a professional unit, while describing the St Vincent and the Grenadines outfit as one composed mainly of part-time players, inclusive of a fisherman and a painter.

However, this did not go down well with some persons, who used Facebook and Twitter to express their sentiments to Darke.

“We love our fishermen and our painters,” wrote Cecelia Sam-Horne.

“What homeless the reporter talking about… SVG have homeless problem?” questioned Annie D Williams.

Meanwhile, someone who goes by the name EZ Sounds stated: “Any place got more homeless ppl than the USA with all its wealth? Really?”

Others who did not take kindly to Darke’s comments did so without reservation and employed the use of expletives to get their points over.

Darke later took to his Twitter account stating, “For St V and G fans, our TV references to part-time players from your lovely islands was in respect for achievement. Wish team very best.”

He also tweeted, “USA did their job with touch of class tonight but Tuesday a more relevant barometer. St V and G fine ambassadors for beautiful islands.”
