TBPO Softball Competition opens with Simple Boyz victory
The 27th National Lotteries Authority (NLA) Top Belair Progressive Organization (TBPO) Softball Competition opened in Dauphine last weekend, with defending champions Gairyâs Construction Simple Boyz once again swooping to victory â showing why they are title holders in three other competitions in the land.{{more}}
In the lone match played last Sunday at the Dauphine Playing Field, Simple Boyz showed themselves on Smart Strikers.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Simple Boyz piled up 266 for 4 from their 20 overs. Openers Jabrari Cunningham (129) and Desron Maloney (108) led the way in the run fest.
Bowling for Smart Strikers, Aldy Spring took 2 for 46 and Andrew Tucker, 2 for 18.
In reply, Smart Strikers reached 74 all out in 17.5 overs, meeting their demise by the bowling of Desron Maloney, 3 for 12, and Kentish Phillips, 2 for 19.
Other than the TBPO competition, Simple Boyz are the reigning champions of the Biabou, Richland Park and Lauders competitions.
Anthony Dennie of the NLA noted that the company has been sponsoring the competition for over 20 years and intends to keep its promise of supporting sports and culture throughout the island.
Dennie also made mention of the NLAâs current support with reconstructive works on different playing fields across the island, and soon intends to place a sitting stadium at the Dauphine Playing Field.
Minister of Sports and area representative Cecil McKie reiterated Dennieâs words on rebuilding and upgrading the cricket fields across the island, and pledged the Governmentâs support in reconstructive works at the playing field.
At the opening ceremony, Ashford Wood announced that the domino competition, which had not taken place over the past two years, will be restarted during this yearâs competition. This announcement was met with much applause.
Gairy Construction Simple Boyz, for the second consecutive year, won the knockout competition, beating Gomea Bombers and winning a cash prize of $600.
This year, Gairy Construction Simple Boyz will be going for the historic hat-trick. (RT and CM)
