Volleyballers make court call for countryside

Volleyballers here are making a loud call for the next sport court received by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association, to be placed on the Windward side of the island, preferably Dickson.{{more}}

This unanimity of thought was expressed last Wednesday at a press conference at Olympic House, to highlight the achievement of the male youth team, which captured the 2015 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s tournament in St Maarten.

Speaking on behalf of the players, team manager Nikita Campbell said: “there is a court at present which the association has and I would like this court to go out to the countryside, because we have a lot of players from the countryside on both the male and female teams.”

Campbell reasoned, “The players in town will train in town and the country players will also have a court out there also to train on.”

In directing her request to the national association for the sport, Campbell stated that preference should go to the village Dickson and according to her, “they have most of the junior players right now.”

Campbell’s comments were supported by the players on hand, who complained that they often have to travel into Kingstown to the Girls’ High School court, which, to them, is a costly venture.

In addition, the male players brought to the fore, the wear and tear on their footwear of the hard court.

Also lending his voice to the matter was coach of the Under-18 female team and assistant coach of the male Under-19 outfit Cassius Franklyn.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association recently received a second sport court from the sport’s regional confederation North Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA).

The first sport court for St Vincent and the Grenadines was laid down at the Girls’ High School last year.

Valued at US$30,000, the sport court is a synthetic surface comprising inter-locking grids, which are laid mainly on concrete surfaces.

Making sport courts donations to members’ associations forms part of the development programme implemented by NORCECA.(RT)
