On the list of certified umpires are Desmond Shallow, Damion Dublin, Deighton King, Sean Stanley, Tyrone Jack, Westfield Williams, Joseph Carrington, Unica Velox, Giles Garraway and Romano Spencer.

Meanwhile, Shallow, Stanley, Jack, Carrington, Dublin, Velox and Spencer added the referees certification to their acumen.

A six-day course was conducted by Silvia Girro at the St Vincent Grammar School from July 20 to 25 and provided the basis for the elevation of the umpires and referees.

Girro commended the successful Vincentians and requested that they take their certification to the next levels.

She stated that over the six days, those who attended “learned a lot.”

The successful Vincentian umpires and referees are now qualified to officiate in table tennis tournaments held here in the Caribbean and other regional competitions.

In making the distinction between the two roles, Girro stated that the umpires’ duties are to adjudicate in the actual matches, whereas the referees are responsible for the tournaments.

“The referee will be in charge of doing the draws and interpretation of rules. If something happens at the table, the referee has to go and give a decision and also he or she would be in charge of equipment, making sure they are good, the light is good and also he would do the umpires’ schedule…He /she will be in charge of all the umpires,” Girro explained.
