Good show by GTC trio at St Lucia tennis tournament
The Grassroot Tennis Club (GTC) trio of Akeil De Roche, Rio Connell and Che Connell did not go all the way at the Coca Cola/Lime junior tennis tournament, but gave a good account of themselves.{{more}}
When the tournament closed last Friday, De Roche and Rio Connell beat Jordon Hunte and Jason Hunte 4-1, 5-3, but had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Under-14 doubles, losing to Aden Bousquet and Seth Joseph of St Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda, respectively.
Rio Connell also lost out to Joseph 4-0, 4-0 in the semi-final stage of the Under-12 and finished third overall.
Meanwhile, Rio Connell paired off with Joseph to beat Jason and Jordon Hunte 4-1, 4-2 in semi-finals of the Under-12 doubles.
In the Under-10 singles main draw, Jaden Julien beat Che Connell 0-4, 4-0, 10-7 to take the runner-up position.
In other results, De Roche had defeated Zabryc Popo in the quarter-finals 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the Under 14.
Hunte defeated Rio Connell 4-0, 4-0 in the Under-12, while Che Connell defeated Alejandro Vargas of St Lucia 4-1, 4-0 and went on to defeat Jean Pierre Roberts of Antigua and Barbuda 4-0, 4-0.
Director of GTC Grant Connell said: âAs a club we will continue to try and get them engaged at the OECS level and await the local association to provide tournaments of this nature with these categories so that our juniors can play,â Connell explained.
