Vincentians among standouts in ECVA Youth tournament

Four Vincentians were among the awardees in the male and female segment of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) tournament, which concluded in St Maarten last Sunday.{{more}}

Topping the list was Ronaldo Franklyn, who won the accolades of Best Scorer, Best Outside Hitter and topped it off with the Most Valuable Player award.

Also securing awards for champions St Vincent and the Grenadines, Delshun Welcome was the Best Receiver, with a 60 per cent efficiency rate and Jad Martin, who had a 52 per cent success rate, the Best Libero.

St Vincent and the Grenadines, en route to the title, stopped Antigua and Barbuda 3-0, but was pushed by St Maarten 3-2.

But last Sunday, in a much charged duel with St Lucia, the Vincentians pulled out all the stops to win 20-25, 25-11, 25 -17 and 25-23, over the defending champs.

St Lucia won two awards, Alexander Augier won the Best Setter award and Anton Richards was the Best Blocker of the tournament.

Likewise, Grenada also won two awards, through Jayvon Gilbert – the Best Digger and Jernel John – the Best Server.

St Martin’s single award went to Opposite Hitter Shiovanni Levenston.

St Maarten finished third behind St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia, with Dominica fourth, Grenada fifth, Antigua and Barbuda sixth and seventh was Anguilla.

On the female side, Vincentian Shernell Browne copped the Best Receiver award.

The Vincentian females’ sojourn saw them beating St Maarten, 3-0 (25-16, 25- 14, 25-22), but they were beaten by Antigua and Barbuda, 25-11, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-18.

In the play-off for the third and fourth spots, the Vincentian lasses caved in under St Lucia, beaten 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24.

Meanwhile, Bedelya Hunt of St Martin was the top scorer and was adjudged the Best Outside Hitter, as well as Best Spiker. Added to that, she was also the Best Server.

As a result Hunt was the female segment’s Most Valuable Player.

Champions St Martin’s Amandha Sylves was the Best Blocker.

St Lucia copped three individual awards: Lovelle Auguste won two, the Best Digger and Best Libero, while Skye Mondesir Faucher was the Best Setter.

St Vincent and the Grenadines placed fourth behind St Martin, Antigua and Barbuda and St Lucia. Completing the overall placing were St Maarten – fifth and the British Virgin Islands – sixth.(RT)
