SVGRU holds second schools’ rugby fun day
Over 100 primary school students from four schools converged at the Grammar School Playing Field last Tuesday, to be part of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Rugby Unionâs (SVGRU) second fun day.{{more}}
Dubbed âGet Into Rugbyâ (GIR), the students were drawn from the St Maryâs Roman Catholic, Georgetown Government, Barrouallie and the CW Prescod primary schools.
As a means of assessing the programme in the pilot schools involved in the GIR, the students played various games and interacted with their peers.
It is hoped that after GIR has been introduced to more schools, the fun day format will change to a Tag Rugby competition, where schools will compete for a trophy.
The GIR is part of a grassroots programme which has been in place since January 2014, and has seen the students learning not only the basic skills of tag rugby, but also important life skills.
According to youth programme coordinator Valarie Pelletier: âThe GIR programme has seen tremendous growth and improvement, with more than 500 primary school students taking part during PE classes…. I am impressed and proud of how far we have come as a Union in such a short space of time.
âThe fun day was a great success and this is largely down to our own Union members who give up their time and skills to help…. It was so enjoyable to see the kids playing a game of tag rugby when it was only introduced to them last year!â Pelletier commented in a release from the SVGRU.(RT)
