New NCIL champ in line… Bagga gets booted

A new senior men’s champion will be crowned in this year’s Hairoun Beer National Inter Community League (NCIL) championships, this after three-time winners — Bank of SVG Barrouallie – were booted out last Sunday night at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

Facing last year’s losing finalist National Lotteries Authority Central Kingstown, Barrouallie were beaten two goals to one.

An Azhino Solomon penalty and a Deomaji Samuel item in the first period of extra time accounted for Central Kingstown’s goals.

Samuel’s go-ahead goal in the first period of extra time sparked some controversy, as assistant referee Kenran Daniel ruled that the ball had crossed the line after hitting the cross bar.

Reginald Richardson scored the dethroned champions’ equalising goal, as he powered a header past Jovan Lynch, directly from a left side corner.

The journey in this year’s championships was a rocky one for Barrouallie, as they were beaten by Layou and Calliaqua in the second round of the competition.

Before Central Kingstown had upstaged Barrouallie, the first quarter-final saw GECCU Calliaqua continuing their dream run in the championships, when they ousted 2014 third placed West Kingstown, 3-1.

A hat-trick from Lezlo Mc Kenzie placed Calliaqua in their first ever semi-finals. Collin Joseph had equalized for West Kingstown, to send the match into extra time.

The other quarter-finals were set to be played last evening and would have featured East Kingstown versus Layou, then Hairoun South Leeward against Georgetown.

Central Kingstown and Calliaqua will meet in the semis; similarly, the winners of tonight’s matches face off in the last four.

The first leg of the semi-finals is set for Wednesday, also at the Victoria Park, with the second leg carded for Friday.
