Windwards Volcanoes calm Leewards Hurricanes

The Windwards Volcanoes recorded their third straight win in the West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League, thumping the Leewards Hurricanes by nine wickets within three days at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.{{more}}

Set 83 to win, the Volcanoes reached 84 for the loss of one wicket just after lunch on Sunday.

Devon Smith smashed 39 not out — four fours and a six and Johnson Charles – 27 (three fours and a six), to see their team home in just 12.2 overs.

The Leewards, trailing by 88, were dismissed for 170 in their second innings, undone by the seam bowling of Mervin Matthew — 5 for 32 and Delorn Johnson — 3 for 48.

Sherwin Peters top scored with 42.

The Windwards first innings saw them compiling 249 all out in 57. 3 overs.

Kenroy Peters, sent in as night watchman, lashed a breezy 44, in which he struck six fours. Liam Sebastian — 37, Tyrone Theophile — 34 and Devon Smith — 33, were the other notable contributors to the Volcanoes’ total.

Rahkeem Cornwall — 3 for 62, Gavin Tonge — 3 for 67 and Quinton Boatswain — 2 for 34, were the most successful bowlers for the Leewards.

But it was the Windwards that had won the toss on Friday and inserted the Leewards.

Devon Thomas with 38, topped the Leewards’ total of 161 all out in 60 overs.

Kenroy Peters ripped through the bottom half of the Leewards’ batting, bagging 6 for 24 and Delorn Johnson had 2 for 20.

The tournament takes a break this weekend.(RT)
