Butler officially launched his book last Saturday evening at the Stubbs Playing Field, and Maurice John, who chaired the launch, described the book as âan inspiration for all of us….This piece of work is not only worthy, but is a platform for others to follow.â
Citroy Wilkes, another person integral to the sporting development of Stubbs, told SEARCHLIGHT: âThe book is really a conviction on the part of Butler, as it spans a long periodâ¦. It is the right time for a piece of literature like that, because somehow the discipline in sports seems to be going down, the commitment of youth players is not thereâ¦This book should serve as a real motivation.â
Butler described the journey in producing the book as âfrustrating,â as he had to juggle with his day to day job, and still find time to carry out his research.
He said that he was inspired by Michael Findlay and the late Vincent Mc Lean, among others, to embark on such a project.
âNixonâs [McLean] father Vincent, before he passed away, told me âButler why donât you write a book⦠You are in almost every group in the area, you organize this, you organize thatâ â¦I said I have to do something to leave with the persons in the area,â Butler told the audience.
Describing his efforts as the first such production in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Butler noted that a number of sporting personalities were only spoken about, but things were not being documented about them.
Among those featured are Nixon Mc Lean, Melvin Andrews, Bruno Mc Lean and Kirt Mc Lean.
Apart from the sports personnel, Butler highlighted persons who have pioneered in education and community development in the Stubbs area.
In his book, Butler listed such persons as Augustus Daisley Jr, Chester Rogers, Stephen John, Rosita Snagg, Citroy Wilkes, Merle Trotman and others.
Butler said he began gathering the information in the book in October 2011 and completed the compilation last year.
The book is available at the Jujube Bookstore and from Butler himself.(RT)
