Crew capture Guinness Street Football title again

Crew FC earned the right to be St Vincent and the Grenadines’ representative at this year’s regional finals, when they won the local leg in the wee hours of Sunday morning at the National Tennis Centre at Villa.{{more}}

The Sion Hill based outfit Crew FC, formerly Team Crew, will get a second bite at the cherry, as they were this country’s representatives in 2012.

In 2012, Crew, after winning the local final, went on to be crowned the inaugural regional champions in Guyana.

En route to be national champions, it took penalty kicks to decide the winner as both Crew FC and Madd Rockers had played to a goalless draw after regulation and extra time.

Crew FC, however, prevailed 2-1 in the nervy penalty kicks, to pocket $5,000, a trophy, five cases of Guinness and most significantly, a trip to Trinidad for the regional finals, set for June 6 and 7, at the Jean Pierre Complex.

It was sweet revenge for Crew, who had been defeated by Madd Rockers 1-0 in the preliminary round.

Crew’s journey was not smooth, as they had finished as the best second placed team among the nine finalists.

In the group phase, Crew saw off Royal Saints 5-0, before losing to Madd Rockers.

In the semi-finals, Team Crew edged out PYOLA 1-0.

Losing finalist Madd Rockers had a 2-0 win over Royal Saints and got past 2013 winners West Side School Yard 2-0 in their semi-final match up.

The other competitors were One Love, Ball Boyz, All Stars and Cotton United.

Apart from Crew FC of St Vincent and the Grenadines, the participating countries include Guyana, St Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Dominica, as well as debutants Barbados and Jamaica and host and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago.(RT)
