New marks set at Inter Schools Meet

New markers were set down at the 2014 National Lotteries Authority Inter-Secondary Schools’ Track and Field Championships when the finals were held last Thursday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.{{more}}

Responsible for establishing two new records were the Bethel High School’s Shantal Rouse who erased the 400m senior girls mark, which she set in 2013. Rouse clocked 58.55 seconds to break the meet’s previous best of 59.35 seconds.

Rouse also set a new mark of 2 minutes 33.79 seconds in the 800m for senior girls, tumbling Nadia Deplesche’s time of 2 minutes 33.84 seconds, which she attained in 2011.

Another record was attained by a student of the Bethel High School in the person of Akani Slater in the 1500m senior boys run.

Slater recorded 4 minutes 13.63 seconds in the event, which sent Brandon Parris’ record of 4 minutes 20.28 seconds packing.

Sticking with the Bethel High School, Shannell Lampkin’s time of 3 minutes 27.14 seconds recorded in the junior girls 1000m, became a new record, destroying Ianthea Simon’s 3 minutes 31.18 seconds mark, done three years ago in 2011.

Meanwhile, Reberto Boyde, in the senior boys category, equalled his record of 10.91 seconds in the 100m, but smashed his own record in the 200m senior boys sprint event.

The time of 21.78 seconds is the new clocking. Boyde did 2 .91 seconds in 2013 at the nationwide schools’ meet.

Also sent into the past was the Intermediate girls 100m, as Deslorn Lawrence rewrote her own record set in the preliminary round of the event.

The St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown athlete did 12.99 seconds in the preliminaries, but returned last Thursday to clock 12.97 seconds.

Davion Matthews of the Georgetown Secondary did 25.21 seconds in the junior boys 200m, which bettered Dominic Pierre’s clocking of 26.01 seconds over the same distance in 2011.

The multi-talented Adora Lawrence of the Girls’ High School is the new holder of the record in the Intermediate Girls 800m. Her new mark of 2 minutes 31. 46 seconds overturned the one attained by Tara Joseph in 2012.

In the Senior Boys high jump, the Union Island Secondary School’s Darreo Glasgow reached a height of 1.90 m, thus raising the bar. Glasgow left behind Sigmund Jack’s record of 1.87m.

And, four relay records were broken – the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m junior girls and the 4 x 100m senior boys and girls.

The Thomas Saunders Secondary School (TSSS) was responsible for both junior records and the Central Leeward Secondary (CLSS) – the senior marks.

The new time in the 4 x 100m junior girls is 53.87 seconds, downing the Bethel High School’s mark of 54.39 seconds, done by the Bethel High School last year. The TSSS lasses clocked 1 minute 56.35 seconds in the 4 x 200m, replacing the 1 minute 56.42 seconds recorded by the Girls’ High School quartet in 2013.

And, the four athletes of the CLSS clocked 51.56 in the 4 x 100m, doing away with that of 51.94 seconds achieved by the Bethel High School last year.

The senior boys of the CLSS followed suit over the same distance, as they stopped the clock at 44.29 seconds, shaving off 0.33 seconds from the previous mark by the TSSS in 2012.

The records, though, are based on the re-established format which started in 2011, when the use of the electronic Hy-Tek’s Meet Manager (electronic timing) came into effect. (RT)
