Ambris hits maiden first class century… Detractors get buss mouth

Vincentian Sunil Ambris hit his maiden first class century last Thursday in his debut match for the senior Windwards team in the regional 4-day Cricket Competition at the National Cricket Stadium in Providence, Guyana.{{more}}

And this came against a background of some grumblings that he was an unwanted man in the team by some officials.

The 20-year-old Ambris, who turns 21 March 23, 2014, hit a chanceless 114, punctuated with 17 fours, facing 200 balls and batted for 238 minutes.

Reports from Guyana indicate that Ambris may be the first player from the Windwards to score a century on debut at the regional first class level.

After earning his call-up to the squad for the second round encounter in Trinidad and Tobago on the previous weekend, Ambris did not make the final cut, but replaced St Lucian Dalton Polius for the match against Guyana.

He was fulcrum of the Windwards’ total of 307 all out, as he shared in a fifth-wicket partnership of 156, with his captain Liam Sebastian.

Both took the score from 107 to 263, before Ambris fell LBW to Christopher Barnwell, who finished with 4 for 54.

Sebastian had contributed 60, while Tyrone Theophile, at the top of the order, registered 42 to the eventual Windwards total.

Bowling for Guyana, Veerasammy Permaul Permaul took 3 for 69 and Narsighn Deonarine, 2 for 54.

Guyana replied with 213; Assad Fuddadin scoring 82. Bowling for the Windwards, Kenroy Peters grabbed 4 for 42 and Liam Sebastian, 2 for 75.

Windwards, with a lead of 94, folded for 114 in their second innings, with Rommel Currency making 48 not out.

Permaul completed a 10-wicket haul as he pocketed 7 for 49, to end with 10 for 118, and Deonarine, 2 for 35.

Guyana in quest for 209 to win, was 171 for 7 at the close in the drawn match.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored 40 and Deonarine, 38.

Peters had his second four-wicket haul, as he captured 4 for 38 and Sebastian had 2 for 39.

To crown off an unforgettable first class debut, Ambris, who has played for the West Indies Under-15 and Under-19 teams, the UWI Vice Chancellor’s and the Combined Campuses and Colleges in the regional 20/20 competition, was named Man of the Match.

The Windwards next play Jamaica in Jamaica.(RT)
