Young TT players come through in national championships
The Table Tennis cupboard is once being replenished with the emergence of some budding players who are showing potential.{{more}}
Thanks to the vision and focus of the current executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association, an Under-17 Division was created in the just concluded KPMG National Championships.
When everything was done and dusted last Saturday night at the West St George Secondary School at Belair, the top four players in that age group were realized.
Aliyah John secured the female title, taking out Cortney Bacchus 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9).
In the male segment, Kadeem De Shong outlasted Cruz Hablich, also 4-1 in the final (7-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8)
Before reaching the final, to set up the meeting with Halbich, De Shong had defeated Rondre Jon, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8, while Halbich had undone André Mitchell, 9-11, 14-12, 13-11, 11-6 in a competitive race to the final.
These players, along with those to be netted from the various schoolsâ programmes and the Grassroots programme, are expected to be the bedrock on which the future of the sport will be laid.(RT)
