Owia Young Strikers stomp on Greiggs softball glitz

Owia Young Strikers did not disappoint the two van loads of supporters who journeyed from Owia to Greiggs last week Saturday, as they went back home in a buoyant mood.{{more}}

The reason for the merriment and celebrations was the capture of the 2013 Hairoun Beer/Premier Distributors/Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem Twenty/20 softball cricket title.

Facing the 2012 winners – CGM Novice, Young Strikers won the toss and inserted their opponents.

It was a decision which seemed right as Novice lost one of their key batsmen, Hyron Shallow, early in the proceedings.

But Renrick Williams muscled the innings, thumping 62, inclusive of eight sixes and a four.

Elton Williams added some impetus at the end of the innings with 21, as Novice scored 130 for 8 from their maximum 20 overs.

Stand-in captain for Young Strikers, Rolando Wright, snared 3 for 16. Rondell Munroe, 3 for 24 and Davison Lavia, 2 for 31, shared the wickets.

Young Strikers’ opening pair of Osneth Cato and Recarvo Williams then belted the Novice bowlers to all parts of the Greiggs Village Playing Field, rushing to 45 in 4 overs, before Williams perished for 28.

Cato continued to shepherd the response, but fell for 41, which included four sixes and a four.

Wright pushed his team over the line with a breezy 33, in which he lashed five sixes, to see Young Strikers to 135 for 6 from 19 overs.

Kentish Phillips picked up 2 for 11, bowling for Novice.

Young Strikers left Greiggs with the winner’s trophy, the challenge trophy and $2,500, while Novice had to resign themselves to the second place prize of a trophy and $1,500.

Saturday’s final was a carry-over from the previous Sunday, when rain prevented the Young Strikers versus Novice clash. (RT)
